General Description: The course will examine various practice areas in which attorneys represent clients in the District Court. Class discussions will include an overview of the District Court, the basic components of Criminal practice (e.g., traffic cases, sentencing, bond review, probation) and Civil practice, Civil Domestic Violence proceedings, Landlord-Tenant proceedings, and Municipal Infractions. The class meeting at the law school will be followed each week by a class at the Rockville Courthouse where students will be able to observe proceedings and then discuss with the instructors – both Maryland District Court Judges. A substantial component of the course will comprise lecture and student presentations in the civil and criminal contexts. Students will be assigned attorney and witness roles and will learn by “trial and error” in simulated exercises. Students watching the simulations will be expected to critique the simulated performances. The course will be graded “CR”.
