Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Speaks to the George Mason Law School Community on the Judicial Nomination and Confirmation Process


On Tuesday, October 18, 2005 United States Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales addressed the law school community on the judicial nomination and confirmation process. His speech was entitled "Respecting the Constitution -- In Judicial Debates and Judicial Nominees" and was followed by a question and answer session with an audience of over 200 students, faculty and staff.

Attorney General Gonzales was sworn in as the nation’s 80th Attorney General in February 2005. Before coming to the Department of Justice, Mr. Gonzales served as Counsel to President George W. Bush. Prior to that, he was a Justice of the Texas Supreme Court. He also held the position of Texas Secretary of State.

Mr. Gonzales was General Counsel to Governor Bush and was a partner with the law firm of Vinson & Elkins L.L.P. in Houston, Texas. While in private practice, he taught law as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law Center. He has served in a broad range of professional and civic organizations and has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards. Among these are his 2003 induction into the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Hall of Fame, a Good Neighbor Award from the United States-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, and President’s Awards from the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the League of United Latin American Citizens. The Association of Rice Alumni recognized in him 2002 as a Distinguished Alumnus of Rice University, and he was presented with the Harvard Law School Association Award. The Hispanic National Bar Association recognized Gonzales as the 1999 Latino Lawyer of the Year, and he received a Presidential Citation from the State Bar of Texas in 1997 for his dedication to addressing basic legal needs of the indigent.

Mr. Gonzales was born and raised in Texas, where he graduated from Rice University. He later received his law degree from Harvard Law School. He is a veteran of the United States Air Force.
