On Thursday, October
14, 2004, the Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme
Court spoke at an event at George Mason School of
Law. The Honorable Leroy Rountree Hassell, Sr. delivered
an address about the impact and importance of the
United States Supreme Court's decision in Brown
v. Board of Education which is celebrating its
50th anniversary this year.
Justice Hassell became the first African
American Chief Justice in the 225-year history of
the Commonwealth of Virginia when he was sworn in
back in February 2003. Hassell is also the first
chief justice elected by his colleagues. Before the
Virginia Legislature changed the process in 2002,
the position automatically went to the justice with
the longest tenure.
Born and raised in Norfolk, VA., Chief
Justice Hassell received his undergraduate degree
in Government and Foreign Affairs at the University
of Virginia and his J.D. from Harvard, where he was
a classmate with Governor Mark Warner.
