Professor Michelle Boardman to Serve as Deputy Assistant
Attorney General
Assistant
Professor of Law Michelle Boardman is taking a leave
of absence from the law school to join the United States Department
of Justice as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office
of Legal Counsel. In her new position, Professor Boardman will
be responsible for assisting the Attorney General in his function
as legal advisor to the President and all the executive branch
agencies. In announcing Professor Boardman's appointment, Dean
Dan Polsby commented, "The extent to which the government
calls upon members of our faculty for service in positions of
the greatest sensitivity is something we can all be justly proud
of."
The Office of Legal Counsel is also responsible for drafting
legal opinions of the Attorney General and providing its own
written opinions and oral advice in response to requests from
the Counsel to the President, the various agencies of the executive
branch, and offices within the Department and providing legal
advice to the executive branch on all constitutional questions
and reviewing pending legislation for constitutionality. Also,
all Executive orders and proclamations proposed to be issued
by the President are reviewed by the Office of Legal Counsel
for form and legality, as are various other matters that require
the President's formal approval.
Professor Boardman received her J.D. from the University of
Chicago and her B.A.from Brown University. After graduating
from the University of Chicago Law School, where she was a member
of the University of Chicago Law Review, Professor Boardman
clerked for Judge Frank H. Easterbrook of the Seventh Circuit
Court of Appeals. She joined the George Mason law faculty in
2002 after practicing appellate law for several years with Wiley
Rein & Fielding. She teaches contracts and specializes in
insurance law.
