School of Law Moves to 38th in U.S. News & World Report 2005 Rankings
George
Mason’s School of Law advanced to 38th in the new
U.S. News & World Report ranking of U.S. Law
Schools. Last year, the School of Law ranked 40th in the
country, after being ranked 47th the past two years, and
remains the youngest law school in the top tier. As in prior
years, the law school earned high scores in multiple categories.
This year, George Mason received major increases in the
following U.S. News measures: quality of entering
class; reputation among academics; resources invested in
students; and proportion of graduates employed. A total
of 177 ABA-approved law schools were ranked.
In a message to the law school community, School of Law
Dean Mark Grady attributed the law school's steady advance
in the rankings over the past five years to "First
and foremost ... the steady scholarly productivity of our
faculty and on the quality of teaching." Dean Grady
also thanked the students "who in my judgment have
created the best law school culture in America. It is mature,
focused, and positive. We are fortunate indeed to have loyal
and enthusiastic students like these, and many of them have
worked hard to create the student institutions that sustain
and build our success."
Each year, U.S. News re-evaluates graduate programs
in five major disciplines: business, education, engineering,
law, and medicine. Programs are ranked using objective measures,
such as entering students' test scores and faculty/student
ratios, and reputation ratings drawn from inside and outside
academia.
The School of Law is one of four Virginia law schools that
were included in the top tier. For more information on the

to enter the First Tier in the influential U.S. News &
World Report ranking of law schools. In addition, George
Mason was ranked in the top 10 in the nation for faculty
quality in law and economics in University of Texas Professor

in professional reputation.
The law school is located in Arlington, Virginia, just
across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. This location
gives students access to year-round employment opportunities
in both Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia (the Internet
capital of the world), allows the law school to maintain
one of the best adjunct faculties in the country, and provides
