Exchange Program: Studying Law and Economics in Hamburg, Germany

The European Union supports the education of students who are interested in the economic effects of legal rules (Economic Analysis of Law). American students from the George Mason University School of Law are invited to study at the University of Hamburg.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Students who study law or economics and other students having a solid background knowledge in these areas, who are interested in the interdisciplinary study of Law and Economics.

PROGRAM OF STUDY:

Economic Analysis of Torts and Insurance, Economics of Property, Economic Analysis of Contract Law, Corporate Law and Economics, Economics of Competition Law, Public Law and Regulation.

DURATION:

One academic year is divided into three terms:
October 1 st – December 31 st; January 1 st – March 31 st; April 1 st – September 30 th.
GMUSL students can participate in the first or second term.

TEACHING LOCATION:

The courses will take place at the University of Hamburg in Germany.

TEACHING LANGUAGE:

English

GRANTS:

American students are eligible for a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for the first term of € 500 * per month.

HOUSING:

The teaching centre in Hamburg will assist in finding appropriate accommodation.

FEES:

The Student Activity Fund fee is approximately € 100 * per term (required), and the price for matriculation into the University of Hamburg is about € 180 * per two terms (optional), which allows students to use Hamburg Public Transport without paying extra fees.

MATRICULATION:

The participating students have to matriculate in the University of Hamburg. The price for the matriculation is about € 180 per semester which allows students to use Hamburg Public Transport without paying extra fees.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS:

Students who want to study in Hamburg for the first or second term should apply by April 15, 2008. Applications should include a cover letter, resume, and unofficial law school transcript. The cover letter should contain your plan for completing the remainder of your law school courses and why you want to study in Germany.
