Biographical Sketch
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF LAW MICHAEL E. O'NEILL is currently taking a leave of absence to serve as Chief Counsel for the United States Senate Judiciary Committee.
Professor O'Neill specializes in criminal law, criminal procedure, and constitutional law. In addition to his academic duties, he served as a Commissioner of the United States Sentencing Commission from 1999 to 2005. Before joining George Mason's law school faculty full-time in 1998, he taught as a member of the adjunct faculty. Professor O'Neill clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge David B. Sentelle of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Professor O'Neill also served as general counsel for the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, as a special assistant U.S. attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, and as an appellate litigator in the U.S. Justice Department's Criminal Division Appellate Section.
Professor O'Neill earned his B.A. summa cum laude (1987) from Brigham Young University and his J.D. (1990) from Yale Law School. While at Yale, Professor O'Neill was editor of articles and book reviews for the Yale Law Journal and articles editor of the Yale Journal on Regulation.
