IPLS Organization Information
What is IPLS?

The purposes of this organization include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • To educate students beyond the formal learning situation of the classroom;
  • To provide for voluntary participation in social activities;
  • To support participation in moot court competitions, seminars and other activities related to intellectual property.

Greenberg Traurig LLP

Greenberg Traurig LLP will be visiting GMUSL on Thursday, October 4 from 5pm - 6pm in Room 221.  Representatives from Greenberg Traurig will discuss their IP practice and answer law students' questions.  This is a wonderful opportunity for law students who are interested in IP to find out more about IP practice and to make contacts.  More information on Greenberg Traurig LLP is available at www.gtlaw.com.

Professional Law Institute

The Professional Law Institute will host an IP law information session on Thursday, October 11 from 4pm - 5pm in Room 120.

AILPA Job Fair Reception

The George Mason University School of Law Intellectual Property Law Society is sponsoring the AILPA Job Fair Reception that will take place Saturday, October 20, 2007 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.  The AIPLA Job Fair Reception is a great chance to network, and all are invited.

IP Writing Competitions
Perkins Coie Patent Law Student Fellowship
Perkins Coie LLP will award a $10,000 academic scholarship and pay a 2L summer associate position with the patent procurement practice group in Seattle, Washington or Menlo Park, California. 

The patent fellowship will be selected on the following criteria:
  • The individual must be a second-year law student in good standing for the degree of Juris Doctor at an ABA accredited law school.
  • The individual must possess a strong academic record, appropriate technical background and prior relevant experience that demonstrates the level of commitment necessary for a successful patent law career.
  • One of the following technical backgrounds is required:
    • Seattle Office - Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science
    • Menlo Park Office - Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Biology, Physics or Chemistry
Applicants should submit the following materials by Wednesday, September 6, 2006:
  • Current Resume
  • Transcripts (photocopies acceptable; transcripts need not come directly from registrar) from law school and all technical degrees
  • Personal statement (applicant should discuss the background behind their interest in patent law, as well as any personal experience that highlights their commitment to the practice of law and/or demonstrates extra potential as a highly successful patent law practitioner)
In-office interviews will be conducted before the final selection process.

Nathan Burkan Copyright Law Writing Contest
Have you recently written a paper on copyright law or is there a copyright subject that you're itching to analyze?  If so, ASCAP's Nathan Burkan Copyright Law writing contest is a great opportunity to receive recognition for your hard work.  Papers can be on any aspect of copyright law, and the deadline for papers is June 30, 2006.  Each participating law school will have a first prize winner ($600) and a second prize winner ($250), and winners qualify for the national contest where the winner gets ($3000), second place ($2000) and third place ($1000).  Prof. Kunin is going to post the rules on the bulletin board in front of his door (Room 411) and they are also available at http://www.ascap.com/musicbiz/burkan/ .  The competition is open to third-year and second-year students, but second year students who receive cash awards cannot compete in their third year.
