Bernstein and Somin Endorse California's Proposition 19

Professors David E. Bernstein and Ilya Somin are among a group of prominent legal educators urging passage of a California ballot proposition that would remove criminal penalties for growing and using small amounts of marijuana.

Bernstein and Somin, along with other local professors from American, Georgetown, and George Washington universities, joined the effort to support Proposition 19, saying the country's policies toward marijuana usage have created a violent black market and clogged the court system with nonviolent drug offenders. Instead the group urges taxation and regulation of cannabis.

All were clear that they were expressing their personal opinions and not those of their respective universities.
