Sales Discusses Patriot Act Extension on Seattle NPR
On May 25 Professor Nathan Sales was a guest of radio host Ross Reynolds on his program The Conversation on Seattle's National Public Radio affiliate KUOW 94.9 FM.
Sales and Shahid Butler, constitutional lawyer and executive director of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, participated in a discussion of the proposed extension of provisions of the PATRIOT Act that are due to expire at midnight Thursday. The Senate is expected to vote on extension of those provisions some time this week.
Sales presented arguments that the PATRIOT Act expands law enforcement efforts in terrorism investigations to mirror the same investigative techniques used by other law enforcement agencies all along, that there are requirements for judicial review, and that it affords more protection of individual liberties than criminal law does.
