Somin Speaks on Campaign Finance at Amherst College Event
On October 26 Professor Ilya Somin was a member of a discussion panel on campaign finance that took place at Amherst College. The event was hosted by the Amherst Political Union and the Amherst Economic Forum.
The discussion's theme was "The $3 Billion Election: Money, Speech and the Future of Campaign Finance." The participants considered how the nation's elections have become dependent upon increasingly large private donations from corporations, unions, and individuals in the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United and the emergence of "Super-PACs," as well as the question of whether the money has redefined the character of government or whether it extends our rights as citizens.
Featured on the panel along with Somin were Lawrence Lessig, Harvard Law School; John Samples, Cato Institute; and John Médaille, University of Dallas. Nick Bruce of the Amherst Economic Forum served as moderator.
