Email and Network

GMU E-Mail

All law students have free GMU e-mail accounts with a 50 MB quota. Faculty and staff receive a 300 MB quota. The e-mail system can be accessed via the web (mail.gmu.edu) or with an IMAP client like Mozilla Thunderbird (highly recommended) or Microsoft Outlook. The e-mail system is supported by the University's ITU department. For problems with your account, contact support@gmu.edu or call 703-993-8870. To activate your account for the first time, see our Email Activation Instructions. If you have forgotten your password, go here to reset it: https://chimera.gmu.edu/e-mail/prod/index.html.

The university provides limited free dial-up access to its modem pool at speeds up to 56K. The telephone number for dial-in is 703-426-2468. The free dial-up service is limited to on-campus services like e-mail, library resources, and to the LEXIS and Westlaw databases. See the ITU Support Center for dial-up instructions and other services.

NOTICE TO STUDENTS: It is expected that every student regularly check his/her GMU email account, as it is used for all Mason Law communications, including emergency notices as well as academic, student organization, physical plant and career information. There are no excuses for missing deadlines or other important information due to failure to read emails sent to student email accounts. If you forward your GMU e-mail to another account, be sure to regularly check your GMU account to make sure that it is NOT over quota and bouncing messages.

E-Mail Spam Filter

The university provides an automatic spam filer called IronPort. You will automatically receive daily junk mail summaries from IronPort in your GMU e-mail. You can change settings on your junk mail and view all messages caught in your junk mail filter by going to https://ironport-antispam.gmu.edu/ (login with your GMU e-mail username and password).

Student Listservs

The Law School makes heavy use of student listservs for communicating important information from the law school administration on classes, weather alerts and cancellations, career services information, and school-wide events. The student organizations also send out messages announcing events of interest to law students. Students will be automatically subscribed to the appropriate list before the beginning of each academic year. The lists are archived on the web at law.gmu.edu/students/listservs. If you believe that you are on the wrong list or you're not receiving messages, please contact Deborah Keene at dkeene@gmu.edu.

Network - Wired and Wireless

Most seats in the six large classrooms (120, 121, 221, 225, 329, 332) have Ethernet jacks that provide access to the Internet, as well as electrical outlets for laptops. In addition, Room 224 has electrical outlets at the seats. There are also ethernet ports and electrical outlets built-in to most of the law library's tables and carrels. To access the wired network, you will need to start-up your browser, go to a site outside of GMU and enter your GMU e-mail login and password. To plug-in to the wired network, you will need to provide your own standard RJ45 Ethernet cable. There is also building-wide wireless network available to anyone in the GMU community who has a GMU e-mail account. The wired network is generally much faster than the wireless network and is highly recommended for students who are taking exams on laptops.
