Matthew Smith, Class of ’15

Associate, Sterne, Kessler

Mason was the perfect marriage of law and science for Matthew Smith. With a Phd. in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences, Matthew was looking for the right law school to maximize his science expertise in the legal world. In choosing Mason Law, he found a powerhouse curriculum and expertise in IP Law. What he didn’t realize before he started law school was just how exceptional the Scalia Law community was. “It was the closeness of the community” that made the difference, says Matthew. “I felt that everyone cared about each other at Mason, and everyone helped each other when needed.”

Matthew gave back to that sense of community as well. In a law school with a specialized track and concentration in Intellectual Property Law, where nearly 30% of students take IP related classes, Mathew became the President of the Intellectual Property Law Society at Mason, energizing a community of young IP law students and organizing a host of informative IP networking events.

A May 2015 graduate, Matthew joined the IP prosecution practice at Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox in September. He says the best part of his job is “working with cutting edge science while helping clients protect their inventions.”
