Considers the major income transfer and health care programs that make up the social welfare state in the United States. Development of the programs and current legal policy issues will be emphasized. Covers unemployment insurance; Social Security Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (RSDI); Medicare; Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); Supplemental Security Income (SSI); food stamps; and Medicaid. The cultural, demographic, and economic factors which influence welfare policy changes are emphasized.
