Free CLE Opportunity: Military Legal Assistance Issues March 15

The American Bar Association Standing Committee on Legal Assistance for Military Personnel (LAMP) and the Virginia State Bar Military Law Section (MLS) present a free CLE opportunity for attorneys on the topic of Military Legal Assistance Issues. The event takes place on Thursday, March 15, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. at George Mason University School of Law in Arlington, Virginia.

Designed as an educational program for lawyers, the program will focus on current developments and best practices in consumer litigation; the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and how to recognize violations and protect your clients from abuses; avoiding auto fraud by understanding the basics of how cars are sold and financed, the legal claims that commonly occur, and the steps that can be taken to protect against deceptive practices; a current snapshot of cutting-edge issues for the family law practitioner on the evolving interface between domestic relations and the SCRA; how the Boards for Correction of Military/Naval Records (BCMR) function, and the attorney disciplinary process, myths and misconceptions about it; and practical ways to avoid bar complaints.

MCLE accreditation has been requested from every jurisdiction with MCLE requirements. Earn up to six hours of CLE credit, including one hour of Ethics. This program is designed for military attorneys working in legal assistance as well as civilian lawyers whose practices involve military clients or issues. Attendees from all installations in Virginia and elsewhere are welcome.

Attendance is free for active duty judge advocates, federal civilian legal assistance attorneys, government attorneys, and members of the Virginia State Bar Military Law Section (MLS). If you are a civilian attorney who would like to attend and are not currently a member of the MLS, you may join by filling out the form here. There is a $20 membership fee.

Participants are encouraged to download free CLE program materials, beginning 6 March 2012 and will be emailed information on downloading materials. Lunch is on your own.
