Secretary Panetta was the 23rd Secretary of Defense, serving from July 2011 to February 2013.  Prior to joining the DOD, he served as Director of the CIA from February 2009 to June 2011, where he managed human intelligence and open-source collection programs on behalf of the intelligence community.  Panetta co-directed, with his wife, the Leon and Sylvia Panetta Institute for Public Policy, based at California State University, Monterey Bay. The institute is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit that seeks to instill the virtues and values of public service in young people.  In March 2006, Panetta was chosen as a member of the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan committee created at the urging of Congress to conduct an independent evaluation of the war in Iraq.  From July 1994 to January 1997, Panetta was President Bill Clinton’s Chief of Staff. Before serving as Chief of Staff, Panetta was the Director of the Office of Management and Budget.
