Jina Hwang '05 Honored, Asks Support for HBCU Pipeline Program
Jina Hwang, ’05, received George Mason University’s Distinguished Alumni Award at a gathering at Scalia Law on October 12. Nearly 100 alumni and friends celebrated her achievement.
Dean Ken Randall saluted Hwang for her many outstanding contributions to the Law School and the profession. She was recently promoted to assistant inspector general for legal services and counsel to the inspector general for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. In addition, she is a member of the Law School’s Dean’s Advisory Council and the Corley Institute and is a board member for Mason’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion board.
Hwang’s service and generosity to Scalia Law includes championing the new Scalia-Hampton Pipeline Program, offering a pathway to African-American students interested in studying law. True to form, Hwang turned an event in her honor into a platform for challenging others to support this program. She hosted five such students from Hampton University and asked everyone in the room to take a moment to speak with each of these aspiring legal professionals. She has also pledged $30,000 to the program.
Senior Associate Dean Alison H. Price shared stories of Hwang's days as an outstanding law student. Adjunct Professor Jason Derr, LLM '13, assistant inspector general for legal services and counsel to the inspector general for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, spoke about his career in government service.
