Biographical Sketch
Brian M. Hirsch litigated and settled family law cases in Northern Virginia during the first 25 years of his practice. In 2012, he became certified in Family Law Mediation with the Virginia Supreme Court, and his practice is currently limited to that field.
Professor Hirsch has been a substitute judge since 2015, serving various juvenile and domestic relations district courts in Northern Virginia. He stepped down in 2023 as the editor of the Virginia Family Law Quarterly after 10 years.
He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (2004 to present) and was Listed in Best Lawyers, “Lawyer of the Year” for Family Law Mediation in Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area (2025). He is co-author with Daniel V. Poliner of Virginia Family Law Trial Handbook: Pleadings, Evidence and Strategies (Virginia Continuing Legal Education Foundation - 1st edition - 2017, 2nd edition - 2021, 3rd edition - 2025).
