Biographical Sketch
JoAnn Koob is an Assistant Professor of Law and the Director of the Liberty & Law Center at Antonin Scalia Law School. She joined the faculty in 2017 and is a founding member of the Liberty & Law Center. Professor Koob teaches a range of courses, including multiple classes on free speech and constitutional law, as well as nonprofit law. Her research focuses on freedom of speech, civil discourse, and nonprofit organizations.
An expert on free speech and civil discourse, Professor Koob developed and leads the Liberty & Law Center’s civil discourse program. She has brought this program to numerous campuses across the country, helping law and undergraduate students develop the skills needed to engage thoughtfully across ideological and cultural divides.
In addition, Professor Koob is a frequent speaker at conferences, campus events, and national forums, where she addresses issues related to the First Amendment and the value of civil discourse in a pluralistic society. She has also appeared on podcasts and in other media discussing the importance of protecting free expression and fostering constructive dialogue.
Before entering academia, Professor Koob practiced corporate law as an associate at DLA Piper US LLP, and later specialized in nonprofit law in the Washington, D.C., area. She earned her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and holds a B.A. from the University of Minnesota.
