Biographical Sketch
Ken Randall served as dean of Scalia Law from December 2020 through June 2026. During his deanship, the school’s national ranking rose to the top 30, LLM and JM enrollment achieved record levels, and the Foundation for Scalia Law, an independent private foundation to support the school’s growth, was established.
Professor Randall began his legal career at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York. He joined the academy in 1985 as a member of the University of Alabama School of Law. Eight years later, he became the school’s dean, a role he held for two decades. While serving as dean, Alabama Law’s U.S. News ranking rose from 96 to 21, then the greatest jump in the history of the rankings.
Professor Randall received a JD from Hofstra, where he was editor-in-chief of the Law Review and outstanding law graduate; an LLM from Yale, and an LLM and JSD from Columbia. His original subject area was International Law; his research and writing has appeared in the Columbia, Texas, Minnesota, Washington University (St. Louis), Ohio State, and NYU international law reviews, and Duke University Press published his International Law book. Mid-career he took executive education courses at Harvard Business School and the Columbia Business School.
In the classroom, Professor Randall has taught an array of courses, including Private Equity & Venture Capital; Healthcare Law; Healthcare Compliance; Legal Ethics; Constitutional Law; Public International Law; and International Business Transactions. He has served the American Bar Association as an inspector for the re-accreditation of more than a dozen law schools throughout the nation. He chaired the ABA committee from which legal education’s distance education rules originated.
In addition to his academic accomplishments, Professor Randall has excelled as an entrepreneur. In 2013, he founded iLaw Distance Education, which became the market leader in distance legal education. In 2017, iLaw was acquired by BARBRI Holdings, through Leeds Capital (NY). He also has founded businesses in the healthcare sector. He has served on the boards of a number of both non-profit organizations and privately held businesses.
Professor Randall maintains active bar licenses in New York and Alabama and has an associate membership in Virginia.
