University Commencement is on Friday, May 17, 2019.

The University Commencement is officiated by the University President and recognizes all 2019 graduates of George Mason University. Law graduates are encouraged to attend. Doors will open one hour prior to the start of the ceremonies. It is advisable to arrive at that time.

EagleBank Arena has instituted a new standard security policy for all events at the facility. Guests must consent to a search of their person and/or any items they may wish to bring into the arena, including bags. Each patron attending will be allowed to carry one personal item into the arena.

Special Needs Seating: Seating in all sections of the EagleBank Arena, Rows E, F, and G are marked reserved for special needs. These rows are on the concourse level and are easy to access seating without requiring the use of stairs. Ushers are stationed at each portal to assist with seating. Guests requiring special assistance may be seated with one other guest from their party in these easy-access rows. No advanced notice is necessary to utilize this seating option. Wheelchair accessible seating is available in the four corner portals, 4, 8, 13, and 17.

All parking lots on campus will be available for guest parking. Handicapped and special-assistance parking is available in Lot A, adjacent to the EagleBank Arena, South Entrance.

Antonin Scalia School of Law Celebration is on Saturday, May 18, 2019.

The School of Law Celebration is a special ceremony for law graduates only. This ceremony is NOT to be confused with the University Commencement held on Friday. Graduates are encouraged to attend both. The School of Law Graduation ceremony will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.

Graduating students may bring up to 8 guests. If you wish to bring additional guests, please contact Denise Beatty at dbeatty@gmu.edu. Paper tickets will NOT be issued for the ceremony.

Graduates and Guests should park in the Visitors Parking Garage next to the Concert Hall.

February 18 Graduation applications due to the Law School Records Office.
April 1 to April 19 Cap and gown rentals may be ordered in person through the Arlington Campus GMU Bookstore. A $25 late fee will be assessed.
April 19 April 19 is the last day to order cap and gown rentals.
May 6 Graduates whose family members require special assistance or extra tickets must contact Denise Beatty at dbeatty@gmu.edu no later than May 6.

May 6 - May 15 Caps and Gowns will be distributed at the Arlington Campus GMU Bookstore during regular business hours: Monday – Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you do not pick up your cap and gown by May 15, you must pick up it up prior to the Law School Celebration Ceremony at 11:00 a.m.

May 18, 2019 - Law School Celebration Sequence of Events

11:45 a.m. Law Graduates arrive at the Concert Hall. Park in the Parking Garage next to the Concert Hall. Robe in theater area, backstage. DO NOT BRING PERSONAL ITEMS, PURSES, OR VALUABLES WITH YOU INTO THE THEATER AREA. There is no place to put them.
11:45 a.m. Panoramic class photo taken outside Concert Hall, weather permitting. In the case of inclement weather, the photo will be taken inside the Concert Hall. Don’t be late!
12:10 p.m. Graduates line up alphabetically backstage for processional. PROMPTNESS IS ESSENTIAL!
12:15 p.m.

Doors open for guests. Guests who need special assistance should arrive by this time.

1:00 p.m. Procession begins.
2:45 p.m.

Ceremony ends, followed by light refreshments.

2:45 p.m. Return caps & gowns to designated area.

 NOTE: GMU Events Management handles photography for the ceremony. Photographic proofs of graduates receiving their diplomas will be mailed directly to each graduate. Beverages, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, and smoking are prohibited in the Concert Hall.

The Student Bar Association invited graduates, their families, and the guests to the Annual Law School Graduation Reception.

The Student Bar Association hosts a special graduation reception for graduates, their families, faculty, and staff the evening before the Law School Graduation Celebration.

Attire: dressy casual. Free parking is available in the Founder’s Hall garage from 5:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. All students who plan to attend the reception must register. An Eventbrite will be available soon and a link provided here.

Caps & Gowns

Cap and gown rentals may be ordered through the link below. Online ordering will be available until April 1. Cap and gowns ordered after that date must be done in person at the GMU Arlington Bookstore by April 19. A $25 late fee will be assessed to all orders placed at the bookstore between April 1 to April 19.

Cap and gown rentals cost $129.98. You must provide your height, weight, and hat size.

The law school will cover the cost of graduation cap and gown for those graduates who agree to attend both the University Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 17 and the Scalia Law School Law Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 18. Students who choose to attend only the law school specific ceremony will be required to rent their own cap and gown at the time of order. Students will be asked to make their attendance selection at time of cap and gown order.

Students who choose to attend both ceremonies and have their cap and gown costs covered by the law school will be required to sign in at the Friday ceremony. A law school staff member will collect signatures once students are seated in the arena at the Friday ceremony. If the law school does not receive an individual student’s signature affirming their attendance, then (1) the law school will presume the student was unable to attend the ceremony, (2) the student will be required to reimburse the cost of the cap and gown to the law school, and (3) the student’s transcript request(s) and diploma will be held until such time as the reimbursed cost is received by the law school.
