The University Commencement is officiated by the George Mason University President and recognizes all 2022 graduates of George Mason University. The law school will not have an official presence, but law students can participate if they choose.

The School of Law Convocation Ceremony is a special ceremony for law graduates only. Graduating students may bring up to 7 guests. If you wish to bring additional guests, please contact Denise Beatty at dbeatty@gmu.edu and you will be placed on a wait list. Extra tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis after the registration period closes.

Graduates (and only graduates) must register for tickets for themselves and their guests if they are planning on attending graduation. Each ticket you register for must state the name of your guest. Guest substitutions are allowed. Please contact Denise Beatty at dbeatty@gmu.edu to change a name on any of your tickets.

Tickets registered for by a non-student or multiple tickets in the same name will be cancelled. Please do not register more than once.

Registration will close on April 18.

To reduce staff contact with guest belongings, note the Clear Bag Policy:

The only bags allowed are:

  • Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags (maximum size: 12"x6"x12")
  • Small clutch bags approximately the size of a hand (maximum size: 4.5"x6.5")

8:15 a.m. Law Graduates arrive at Warner Theater. Robe in the theater area, backstage. DO NOT BRING ANY PERSONAL ITEMS, PURSES, or VALUABLES WITH YOU INTO THE BACKSTAGE AREA. There is no place to store them
8:45 a.m. Class of 2022 Photo.
9:00 a.m. Doors open for guests.
9:15 a.m. Line up in alphabetical order backstage for procession.
10:00 a.m. Convocation begins.
12:00 p.m. Convocation ends.
12:30 p.m. Return cap and gowns to designated area. Keep tassels.
12:45 p.m. All graduates and guests must vacate the theater.

Free parking is available in the Founder’s Hall garage from 5:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Caps and Gowns, Announcements, Class Rings, Etc.

Caps and Gowns

Cap and gown are available to order online. Online ordering will be available until April 1. Cap and gowns may be ordered in person after April until May 6 at the Arlington Campus Bookstore. A $25 late fee will be assessed.

For LLM and JD graduates cap and gown rentals cost $129.98. You must provide height, weight, hat size, and name. Cap and gowns must be returned at a designated area after the Convocation Ceremony. The tassel is yours to keep.

Cap and gowns will be distributed at the Arlington Campus Bookstore during regular business hours: Monday through Thursday 9:30 am to 7:00 pm, and on Friday 9:30 am to 4:00 pm the first week of May. You must pick up your cap and gown by Friday, May 13 at 4:00 p.m.

For JM graduates cap and gown purchases cost $120.98. You must provide height, weight, and name. These cap and gowns are yours to keep. Cap and gowns for JM graduates only will be mailed directly to the address you specify at checkout.
