LEC Hosts All-Star Panel to Celebrate George Mason’s 300th Birthday

On Monday, December 8, 2025, the Law & Economics Center hosted The Un-Forgotten Founder: A Celebration of George Mason’s Legacy on the Occasion of His 300th Birthday. The program included a reception, celebratory exhibits from George Mason’s Gunston Hall and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, and an all-star panel of legal experts who discussed Mason’s lasting impact on American constitutional thought.

The panelists included:

  • Akhil Reed Amar, Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science at Yale Law School
  • Michael S. Greve, Professor of Law at George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School
  • The Honorable Edith Hollan Jones, Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit
  • The Honorable William C. Mims, Senior Justice on the Supreme Court of Virginia

The Honorable J. Michelle Childs, Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, served as moderator.

Welcome remarks were delivered by Henry N. Butler, Chairman of the LEC; Donald J. Kochan, Executive Director of the LEC; and Nell Payne, Member of the Gunston Hall Board of Regents, Director of the Office of Government Relations for the Smithsonian Institution (retired), and descendant of George Mason.

More than 120 participants attended the celebration, including state and federal judges from across the country, private practitioners, government attorneys, scholars, and other friends of the Law School.
