Judge Ginsburg attends ceremony in the Chamberlain's Court at Guildhall

Hon. Douglas H. Ginsburg was recently given The Freedom of the City of London. A tradition dating back to the 13th century, the Freedom was originally granted to allow members of a guild or livery the right to trade within the city. In more recent times, the City of London Corporation invites individuals who have made a significant impact in their field to "take up the Freedom." Judge Ginsburg was recently presented with the Copy of the Freedom at a ceremony in the Chamberlain's Court at Guildhall, at which time the Clerk of the Court extended the right hand of fellowship to him and greeted him as a Citizen of London.

Judge Ginsburg joins distinguished company in being given the Freedom of the City. Queen Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher, five U.S. presidents, and Benjamin Disraeli have been honored, along with Annie Lennox, Bill Gates, Henry Winkler, and Joan Collins! Judge Ginsburg was in London hosting a colloquium for his judicial colleagues and filming for an upcoming documentary about the Constitution.
