Scalia Law Students Excelling in Moot Court Competitions

To date, it has been a successful spring semester for students participating in Moot Court Competitions.

The team of Rebekah Ansboro (‘2D), Jacob Hopkins (‘3D ) and Jack Ring (‘1D), pictured above, won the 15th Annual Tulane International Baseball Arbitration Written Competition. In Major League Baseball, if a player and team cannot come to terms for a contract on their own, they enter arbitration and present their case to a panel of three arbitrators. In the competition, the arbitrators needed to award either the dollar amount for which the player filed or the dollar amount for which the team filed. Rebekah, Jacob, and Jack were assigned briefs for 4 clients:  Vladimir Guerrero JR v. Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Blue Jays v. Vladimir Guerrero JR, Los Angeles Angels v. Shohei Ohtani, and Shane Bieber v. Cleveland Guardians. The quality of their four 10-page briefs granted them first place in the written competition, which featured more than 44 teams. The team is already looking forward to next year and competing in the Oral Advocacy Competition!

Another Scalia Law team consisting of Michael Castrovilla (‘3D), Carolina Celnik (‘3D), and Lia Coito (‘3D) took second place in the Clara Barton International Humanitarian Law Competition. This event was held in Washington D.C. from March 4 to March 6. The Clara Barton competition exposes law students to real world challenges in the practice of IHL. Cases used during this competition are fictional but realistic case studies of armed conflict. Michael, Carolina, and Lia were advised and coached by Professor McDowell, and Professor Lu provided support on ADR during a practice session.

Lastly, the team of Hannah Thurston (‘3D) and Valerie Yu(‘2D) won the Southeast Regional round of the Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition. The competition is an annual inter-law school event sponsored by the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). Hannah and Valerie were coached by Adjunct Professors Naveen Modi, Molly Silfen, Andrew Trask, and Jaynie Lilley. Join us in wishing them luck in the next step of the competition, the national meet that will take place in Washington D.C.

Congratulations to these student winner and all who take time to develop professional skills through moot court participation!
