A Productive Start to 2023 for the National Security Institute

The National Security Institute (NSI) has started 2023 with a remarkable number of events, testimony, and other valuable policy-focused contributions. Below we list much of their work this calendar year, with links to recordings of past events and testimony. (Note that this does not include the numerous, high-profile media appearances made by NSI faculty, advisory board members, and fellows.) This NSI Decision Memo summarizes the threat to U.S. national security from outbound investment to Chinese companies and outlines policy recommendations to restrict U.S. investments into select Chinese industries.

This virtual event examined how China uses digital tools, such as social media platforms like WeChat and TikTok and its social credit system, to further the Chinese Communist Party’s repressive goals. - On the Road to Global Repression: China’s Economic Tools of Exploitation (May 23, 2023)
This virtual event examined how China uses economic tools, such as the Belt-and-Road Initiative, foreign direct investment, and debt diplomacy, to further the Chinese Communist Party’s repressive goals. - US-EU Tech Partnership: Promoting Values Abroad and Enhancing Trade, Security, and Economic Prosperity (May 25, 2023) This virtual event examined the successes of the US-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) and how it relates to international security, enhances economic prosperity for both the US and the EU, and what the TTC can do in the future.
