Meet Ben
“Scalia Law seemed like a hidden gem.”

When Ben Gustafson was considering where to pursue his legal education, choosing Scalia Law came down to the school’s emphasis on the free exchange of ideas, its small size and student-to-faculty ratio, and its proximity to Washington, DC. A strong recommendation from an alumna also helped.
“What really sealed the deal was the scholarship,” shared Ben, who was chosen to be part of the Dean’s Scholars mentoring program. “Scalia Law seemed like a hidden gem.”
Ben’s involvement at the school began this past summer, before he even started as a 1L, serving as a research assistant for Professor Helen M. Alvaré, Robert A. Levy Endowed Chair in Law and Liberty. Professor Alvaré’s focus on property law and religious liberty was of special interest to Ben, as these areas of the law–along with trust and estates–are areas that he is considering for his career.
As he has settled into his first semester, Ben has fully embraced Scalia Law’s rigor of coursework and has acclimated to the Socratic method. What has surprised him is how much fun he is having as a law student. “I didn’t expect law school to be a happy place, but it is!”
