Graduation Ceremony

Graduation is on Saturday, May 16, 2015.

10:00 a.m.

University Commencement  

Patriot Center, Fairfax Campus


The University Commencement is officiated by the University President and recognizes all 2015 graduates of George Mason University. Law graduates are welcome to attend. Tickets for guests are required; each graduate is allotted four (4) tickets. More information about the University Commencement is available on the Mason website.

2:00 p.m.  

School of Law Convocation 

Concert Hall, Fairfax Campus

Graduating Students should arrive by 12:15 p.m.


The School of Law Convocation is a special convocation ceremony for law graduates only. This ceremony is NOT to be confused with the GMU General Commencement ceremony that is held the same day at 10:00 a.m. Graduates may attend both. The School of Law Convocation ceremony will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.

Graduating students may bring up to 8 guests to the School of Law Convocation ceremony. If you wish to bring additional guests, please contact Carol Armstrong in the SBA office at or (703) 993-8160. Paper tickets will not be issued for the ceremony.

Graduates and Guests should park in the Visitors Parking Garage next to the Concert Hall.

Important Dates

February 10 & 11

Cap and gown measurements, announcements, ring and other graduation item orders in Law School AtriumFeb. 10-11, Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Students who order their caps and gowns at this time save $5. February 13

Graduation applications due to the Law School Records Office.

April 18

If you do not get measured for your cap and gown when Oak Hall representatives are in the atrium on Feb. 10-11, you must go to the campus bookstore to be measured. After April 17 you will incur a late fee of $30 on your cap and gown order. No orders will be accepted after May 1.

May 1

Graduates should advise the SBA if they will be bringing guests who need special assistance NO LATER THAN May 1, 2015. Call the SBA at 703-993-8160 or email

May 1 -
May 14

Monday—Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Distribution of caps and gowns at Arlington Campus Bookstore during regular business hours. After May 14, all unclaimed caps and gowns will be taken to the Concert Hall, Fairfax Campus.  Gowns can be picked up there after 12 noon on Graduation Day, May 16.

May 15

6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Evening Cocktail Reception for law grads and their families in the Atrium of the Law School.

May 16, 2015—Sequence of Events, School of Law Convocation

12:05 p.m.

Park in the Parking Garage next to the Concert Hall. Law Graduates arrive at Concert Hall. Robe in theatre area, backstage. Tassels worn on right for ceremony, left for conferral of degree. Graduates may keep tassel. Do not bring personal items, purses, or valuables with you into the theatre area. There will be no security to protect them from theft!

12:30 p.m.

Panoramic class photograph taken outside the Concert hall, weather permitting. The photo will be taken at 12:30 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, the class photo will be taken in the Concert Hall. Don’t be late!

1:00 p.m.

Graduates line up alphabetically backstage for processional line. Promptness is essential!  Guests who need special assistance should plan to arrive at the Concert Hall by 1:15 p.m. See May 1 deadline (above) for information about requesting special seating.

1:15 p.m.

Doors open for guests. (Parking on Parking Deck.)

2:00 p.m.

Procession begins. Graduates follow collegial marshals.

3:45 p.m.

Ceremony ends, followed by light refreshments. Return caps & gowns to designated area.

 NOTE: GMU Events Management handles photography for the convocation ceremony. Photographic proofs of graduates receiving their diplomas will be mailed directly to each graduate. Beverages, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, and smoking are prohibited in the procession and in Concert Hall.

Each year, the Student Bar Association hosts a special reception for graduates the evening before graduation. The reception gives graduates a chance to relax and socialize with their fellow graduates, family members, guests, and faculty/staff/administrators from the School of Law. Information on how to RSVP will be available soon.

Caps & Gowns

Caps and gowns rental orders may be ordered at the Graduation Fair in the Hazel Hall Atrium  on February 10 or 11. If you are unable to attend the Graduation Fair, you should order your cap and gown from the Arlington Campus Bookstore NO LATER THAN April 17, or you will incur a late fee. Caps and gowns will be distributed from May 1–May 14 at the Arlington Campus Bookstore. Hours are Monday—Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m./ Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
